POSTER DESIGN : THE HUSBANDS OF RIVER SONG
This was a personal project. My objective was designing and illustrating a poster inspired by the Doctor Who special “The Husbands of River Song”.
As a starting point, I went looking for the specific style I wanted for the poster. After some research, i settled for 50’s Hollywood film posters as an inspiration, as I felt it would be fitting with the general atmosphere of the episode, and it would pose a fun challenge.

Next, I started with some very rough sketches and notes on what i wanted to feature on the poster. I was quickly satisfied with the composition I came up with. I also sketched out on how I wanted the typography to look.
Before cleaning up the sketch, I grabbed all the visual references I would need from the episode.
With a cleaner sketch, I started working on the color keys. While the first pass was satisfactory and more accurate to the source material, the adjustments made on my second pass gave me a more clear feel of holidays, which was an objective of mine, and was just generally closer to my personal liking.
With the colors settled, I got to work on the rendering of the characters portrayed. For this particular exercise, I chose to do a value study. The following would be the main steps of how I go on about rendering like this.
With the main focus of the poster painted, I went on to render all of the remaining elements.
